About Family Optical

our practice

We are a locally-owned and operated eye health group with two locations in Winnipeg. Our eye health group employs six Doctors of Optometry (ODs) who provide primary vision care. This includes vision correction, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of various eye conditions. A referral to an ophthalmologist is provided when necessary for treatment of eye diseases. We also diagnose and monitor systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes (which often first appear in the eye). Each location is equipped with a full-service optical dispensary, supported by technicians and optometric assistants ready to meet your vision needs.

Optometry is a diverse profession; in addition to the diagnosis and treatment of eye health problems and other health issues, optometrists provide referrals to specialists and other healthcare professionals, as necessary. The profession can also include the sale of corrective glasses and contact lenses, both in the clinic and in the case of contact lenses, online through our website. Family Optical is pleased to embrace all aspects of this unique profession and to provide these services with the highest degree of professionalism and care.

The Family Optical team of optometrists, technicians and staff has been providing quality eye and health care for people of all ages since 1983.

Our Lab

Dakota Lenspro

Dr. Mulhall first established Lenspro, a full-service lab in 1992. In 2009, Lenspro merged with Dakota Optical and adopted the name, Dakota Lenspro (DLP). The merger has enabled DLP to manufacture eyewear prescriptions more efficiently and precisely in a timely manner, without compromising on quality.

DLP is one of very few independently owned and operated optical laboratories in Manitoba and enables Family Optical to control the speed of service and quality of the product produced. Our staff of 14 brings many years of expertise in optical lens manufacturing to DLP.

Our Practice

Our Family Optical team is full of professionals who take great care in all aspects of the eye health services we offer. We appreciate how important your vision is to you as well as how your eyewear can be part of your personal style.

We offer personalized attention, helpful guidance and a wide range of eyewear styles. If you prefer contact lenses, you can now refill your prescription online through this website.

Our practice is supported by the best in diagnostic equipment:

  • An autorefractor/keratometer measures your eye power and shape
  • A non-contact tonometer screens for glaucoma by measuring your eye pressure
  • Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) assesses your visual field for defects (blind spots may indicate glaucoma, strokes or tumours)
  • Detailed visual field analysis is performed with our state-of-the-art Humphrey Visual Fields Analyzer, which is also used to test peripheral vision as may be required by the Motor Vehicle Branch
  • Retinal photography allows for detection of retinal diseases, especially age-related macular degeneration. Diabetic retinopathy monitoring is also facilitated by retinal photography.
